Using the Ratio Calculator
Use quantities describing the same comparison before reducing them. A ratio such as ingredients, screen dimensions or a count of two groups tells you how the parts relate, not necessarily how either part relates to the total.
Worked example
Use the example inputs below to reproduce this result. These are the form's starting values, not recommended targets. Changing your inputs updates your result above; this worked example stays fixed for comparison. Results are rounded for display.
Example inputs
- First part
- 24
- Second part
- 36
Example result
- Simplified ratio
- 2 : 3
Method and assumptions
Divide both parts by their greatest common factor.
Keep the relationship visible
Fractions and ratios describe relationships between quantities. Simplifying changes the representation while preserving that relationship. Keep track of which number is the numerator or first ratio term, and do not reverse the order accidentally. If the values represent measurements, use compatible units before simplifying or comparing them.
Common question
Is 2:3 the same as saying the first part is two-thirds of the total?
No. It says the first part is two-thirds of the second part. Relative to the combined total of five parts, the first part is two-fifths.
