Using the Conversion Calculator
The two units must measure the same kind of quantity. Meters can convert to feet, for example, but kilograms cannot convert directly to liters without additional information such as density. Temperature conversions include an offset as well as a scale factor.
Worked example
Use the example inputs below to reproduce this result. These are the form's starting values, not recommended targets. Changing your inputs updates your result above; this worked example stays fixed for comparison. Results are rounded for display.
Example inputs
- Value
- 1
- From unit
- metre
- To unit
- foot
Example result
- Converted value
- 3.2808399
- Unit
- foot
Method and assumptions
Converts through a common base unit. US and imperial gallons are distinct; temperature conversion includes an offset.
Convert the quantity, not just the number
A unit conversion should preserve the underlying quantity. Start by identifying what is being measured: length, area, volume, mass, temperature or a rate. Similar unit names do not always imply the same conversion rule. Keep the destination unit attached to the answer so the converted number is not later mistaken for an input in the original unit.
Common question
Why is converting Celsius to Fahrenheit different from converting meters to feet?
Length units differ by a scale factor, while Celsius and Fahrenheit also use different zero points. Temperature conversion therefore includes an addition or subtraction. This tool converts temperature readings, not temperature differences, which follow a different rule.
