Using the Square Footage Calculator
Measure length and width in meters and multiply them to obtain square meters. The calculator converts the area to square feet using an area conversion factor, not a single length conversion. It assumes the space forms a rectangle.
Worked example
Use the example inputs below to reproduce this result. These are the form's starting values, not recommended targets. Changing your inputs updates your result above; this worked example stays fixed for comparison. Results are rounded for display.
Example inputs
- Length (m)
- 5
- Width (m)
- 4
Example result
- Area (m²)
- 20
- Area (ft²)
- 215.27821
Method and assumptions
Area = length × width. 1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters.
Divide irregular spaces into rectangles
A single length-times-width calculation covers a rectangle. For an irregular floor, sketch non-overlapping rectangular sections, calculate each area and add them. Check that no section is counted twice. Openings or excluded areas can be subtracted using the same unit, while material waste should remain a separate purchasing allowance.
Common question
Does the result include waste or extra material?
No. It is the geometric floor area only. Cutting waste, packaging increments and installation allowances depend on the product and layout. Add those separately, or use the tile calculator when a tile-count estimate is more useful.
