Using the Body Type Calculator
Measure all three circumferences in centimeters using a consistent technique. Waist-to-hip ratio divides the waist measurement by the hip measurement; shoulder-to-hip ratio divides shoulders by hips. A ratio of one means the two measurements used in that ratio are equal.
Worked example
Use the example inputs below to reproduce this result. These are the form's starting values, not recommended targets. Changing your inputs updates your result above; this worked example stays fixed for comparison. Results are rounded for display.
Example inputs
- Waist circumference (cm)
- 75
- Hip circumference (cm)
- 100
- Shoulder circumference (cm)
- 100
Example result
- Waist-to-hip ratio
- 0.75
- Shoulder-to-hip ratio
- 1
Method and assumptions
Reports measurement ratios only. Body-shape labels are subjective and do not assess health or fitness.
Make repeated measurements comparable
A measurement-based estimate can change because the body changed or because the measurement technique changed. Keep the location, units and method consistent when comparing records. The result cannot identify which explanation applies. A ratio or predicted percentage describes only the measurements used by that equation, not a complete assessment of health or fitness.
Common question
Will this tell me whether I have a particular body shape?
No. The outputs are measurement ratios only. Labels such as rectangle or hourglass depend on subjective definitions and do not assess health or fitness. The calculator deliberately leaves interpretation of those labels outside its scope.
