Using the Speed Calculator
Enter the total traveled distance in meters and elapsed time in seconds. Include stops if you want the average for the whole journey, or use moving time if that is the quantity you intend to compare. Time must be greater than zero.
Worked example
Use the example inputs below to reproduce this result. These are the form's starting values, not recommended targets. Changing your inputs updates your result above; this worked example stays fixed for comparison. Results are rounded for display.
Example inputs
- Distance (m)
- 1000
- Elapsed time (s)
- 120
Example result
- Speed (m/s)
- 8.3333333
- Speed (km/h)
- 30
- Speed (mph)
- 18.641136
Method and assumptions
Average speed = distance / elapsed time.
Carry the units through the formula
Writing the units beside the numbers is a useful way to check a physical calculation. Kilograms divided by cubic meters gives density; meters divided by seconds gives speed. If the units do not combine into the quantity you expect, convert the inputs first. Keep rounding until the final step when using the answer in another calculation.
Common question
Is average speed the same as average velocity?
No. This tool divides traveled distance by time and does not use direction. Average velocity depends on displacement, including direction. A round trip can have a positive average speed even when its overall displacement is zero.
