Check the example: What is the return on an amount that rises from 1,000 to 1,200?

Subtract the initial cost from the ending value: 1,200 − 1,000 = 200. Divide that gain by the initial 1,000 and multiply by 100 to obtain a simple ROI of 20%. Over two years the equivalent compounded annual rate is approximately 9.54%.

(1,200 − 1,000) ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 20% simple ROI.

What this example leaves out

Simple ROI ignores holding time. Annualization assumes a start and end value without interim cash flows. Account separately for fees, taxes and contributions; neither result measures investment risk.
